CoRE Halloween Show Poster

First post in a minute. Enjoy :)

Early Look at Tim’s Comps

I’m putting together a site for a dear friend of mine Tim, and looking to go a bit further out there since he is so pumped about it. He is one of only a few APP-certified piercers in Texas (at the top of the list to boot), and spends his off-time swinging from hooks and chains via suspension piercings.

Take a look for the hell of it and see if your piercer is APP certified.

Not only a true surgically precise professional, but an incredibly determined person moving his practice further and further through practicing body modification, right down to taking time to conduct community seminars in high schools with his shop partner to inform kids about the right way to go about getting pierced without getting hurt, which in essence comes down to picking the proper qualified individual.

So in that regard, I want to go a bit more hand drawn, explore taking camera shots of paper and working with whatever ink I was able to slice off with an Exacto. Some comps below; feedback appreciated.

I owe a bit of the texturing and style to incredible Russian artist cmart (a.k.a Oleg Paschenko) and his team, whose site Conclave Obscurum has single-handedly changed my perception of web interaction and how far people can push the envelope when their minds are game and down (thanks Slava).

I guess I need the ol’ ticker to be somewhere. Enjoy :) Here’s some roughs:

NIN - “Ghosts I-IV” review, BlahBlah, etc.

I can start off by saying everything about this record, from the presentation to the format (even the release date) was an absolute shock and pleasant surprise.

Not only does Trent Reznor push boundaries on more angles than your trig teacher tried to shove down your face, he pushes a release format pioneered by Oxford’s finest Radiohead a tad further.

Rating: ★★★★★
Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV Cover Art

Ghosts I-IV is without a doubt the most adventurous tangent Trent and Co. have gone on yet, and with a solid effort behind them (2007’s “Year Zero”) maybe it was time for it.

The new 36 track collection is available for download from NIN and for a limited time through the Amazon MP3 album store. 36 tracks? Nine Inch Nails? Sounds fancy and pricey…toss that theory out the door and check out my order screenshot below (you can also click the image to head over and download “Ghosts” directly from Amazon):

5 dollars for one of the finest pieces of music I’ve had the pleasure to hear over the last 5 years.

Everything within this incredible body of work visits and leaves with irreverent class = commercially unrestrained, hauntingly beautiful instrumentations when, if taken in bites at first, will reward the imminent front-to-back listening marathon to truly appreciate the cohesiveness stemming from the fruits of Reznor’s arduous 10-week recording sessions last fall.

Hardcore NIN fans will appreciate the artist growth and breathtaking compositions offered on “Ghosts I-IV”, but there will be a large chunk of bum-outs that will write this off as redundant, too far off the mark to be considered a tangent as opposed to a total departure.

I encourage listeners, if not for anything else than the one track for you that’s worth the price to dive into this phenomenon headfirst and let it affect you the way it was meant to.

On a side note, there are pluses and minuses to choose where to get your download from. Nine Inch Nails’ servers are much slower than grabbing the record from Amazon (you will need to install the Amazon MP3 Downloader), but Amazon also didn’t include the exclusive PDF available through NIN’s site.

But no worries; after downloading from Amazon you can get ahold of the 40 page PDF, featuring high resolution photography from Phillip Graybill and Rob Sheridan, straight from the Nine Inch Nails’ “Ghosts” website or just click here.

Everything is moving along at somewhat of a quick pace (although these days bring me a few distractions).

AIDS Foundation Art Collaboration

The AIDS Foundation Art Collaboration piece was a massive success, so rest assure that our collaboration ended up being the most sought after and most bid on piece of the auction from 5 am to 5 pm! All I have to do now is keep trying to pin down the woman who won the bid and see where she’s hanging it! :)

I wasn’t present at the auction unfortunately, but just letting my head sit back for a few days with friends in Los Angeles (and ended up running around to Beverly Hills and Brentwood to get the last of my ‘missing’ tax forms).

LA Roxy

There’s just something in that town that feels like nowhere else on earth (besides the smog). Plus, in Skele’s words, if you are looking to blow off some steam Hollywood has a lot of options.

Also, FFFFOUND! continues to grip my world. It looks as if the registration has been switched from “Private BETA” to now just an “Invitation Only” Service.

We Love Having you Here

I suppose you can’t win them all, but what you can do is rehash the tips I gave in a previous post on scoring a FFFFOUND! invite of your own.

Also, feel free to visit ‘my found’ and check out the collection I’m constantly trying to build. Those areas are public, so have a blast!

Attention all Los Angeles amigos/amigas: Tonight!

Thought I’d put this out there now for all of me ol’ LA/Orange County peeps…make sure to RSVP by 5 or 6 pm PST tonight to the gmail address on the image so they can be sure you are on the list. No RSVP = More cover $$ (good incentive I think). Details of exact locale will be in the return email.

Lost Lounge LA after hours

Keep on your toes! Venue likely to change last second…

Also playing in the audio/visual room at Lost Lounge is Godzilla v. Mothra and Mad Monster Party.

A friend from Small Axe Productions sent the list in of the people headed w/ myself and him…you guys know who ya are :)

5th & Alameda - Warehouse District, LA, CA. - map it. Be there or you don’t get to watch fun monster movies and watch live funk and hip hop performances until sunrise.

Completed ‘Some Fish’…Ready for Auction!

Before anything, I’d first off like to thank everyone who took the time to submit artwork for this cause. It really makes me proud to have the friends and artists I keep company with take the time to submit some art and be a part of a great event.

blurry matty

Thanks to everyone who linked to the art collaboration opportunity on the previous post, talked about it, looked tirelessly for inspiration and feedback, offered to help market, and just had fun designing with no restriction…it shows in the final collection.

My three year-old Jack pumped out a piece, but he missed the deadline. He gets caught up with all these girls and partying and it really detracts from his focus and the poor guy loses sight of his deadlines. But since it reminds me of a nice summer breeze, acid-drenched trees, and thrash metal I thought I’d highlight it for the little guy:

You guys are so sickeningly talented and good-hearted that it blows my mind. All final submissions are listed below. Enjoy them! Here’s some aftermath (trust me..not all of it) from cutting, taping, and (very badly) matting stuff for the last few days:

AIDS Some Fish Donation aftermath

Let’s shed some light on the auction itself:

The final piece will be going up for a charity auction benefiting the AIDS Foundation Houston, a cause I am really proud to be a part of, and a switch up from the shady Children’s Home skimmers that I almost ended up with (thanks, Scott).

The 4th Annual Silent Auction will be held Friday, February 29 at the Starbucks on Montrose & Hawthorne. This is an awesome opportunity to increase awareness and tolerance, network with other artists, and if you feel obliged, put in some low-down bids on cool art or donate directly to AIDS Foundation Houston.

Unfortunately, I won’t be present (I’m dropping off the piece today) as I was just reminded I have a flight to Los Angeles tomorrow afternoon. Rest assure, someone will be there to track the bids and I will update everything to reflect what the masterpiece sold for on return. :)

Please visit the Ning-powered community site to check out artsHouston’s online flyer for the event, and more information regarding donations, art submissions, and contact information.

Thanks so much again, and if you are bouncing around Houston this weekend, try to make it over there! I’ll be having someone photographing the event, and I will post ASAP. Enjoy the final included collection below. ALL PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY TO AIDS FOUNDATION HOUSTON…trust me I’ll make sure of it.
